“groninger Apprentices Break Barriers in Advanced Manufacturing”

In a field where are still under-represented, groninger Apprentice Iliana Cooper is a shining example of breaking the mold.

In a field where women represent just 30% of the workforce in manufacturing and a mere 10% in electrical engineering, groninger Apprentice Iliana Cooper is a shining example of breaking the mold. As the first in her family to graduate from college, she earned her Associate Degree in Engineering from Central Piedmont Community College last month. This fall, Iliana will continue her studies in Electrical Engineering at UNC Charlotte while maintaining full-time employment in advanced manufacturing.

Iliana's journey into the traditionally male-dominated field began right after high school when she secured an internship at groninger USA, a leading manufacturer of filling and closing machines for Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Healthcare und Cosmetics. Her exceptional performance during the summer internship earned her a full-time apprenticeship with the company, which allowed her to simultaneously start her studies at Central Piedmont.

Her success is a testament to the robust partnership between groninger USA and Central Piedmont’s Apprenticeship Charlotte program. Established in 2015, groninger’s apprenticeship program offers practical on-the-job training under the guidance of experienced mentors and supports apprentices with company-paid education. This program exemplifies how apprenticeships can transform careers and break gender barriers in trade professions.

“Our apprenticeship program is a cornerstone of our commitment to fostering talent and driving innovation in advanced manufacturing,” said groninger USA CEO Philipp Hauser. “By providing hands-on training and educational opportunities, we not only equip our apprentices with essential skills but also contribute to the growth and diversity of the industry. Success stories like Iliana’s highlight the transformative power of these programs, demonstrating how we can break barriers and build a brighter future for all."

The program offers numerous benefits, including:

  • A paid career opportunity with an excellent benefits package
  • The ability to graduate debt-free
  • Full-time employment opportunities upon successful program completion
  • Graduation from CPCC with an Associate Degree
  • A Journeyman Certificate from the NC Department of Labor (NCDOL)
  • Additional scholarship opportunities for continued education

groninger USA’s apprenticeship tracks include Mechatronics and Computer Integrated Machining, providing comprehensive training for high-demand careers in technically-oriented areas. The program is open to high school juniors and seniors, veterans, experienced professionals, and nontraditional applicants who meet the following requirements:

  • At least 16 years old at the start of the program
  • Completion of Algebra 1 & 2, geometry, physics, drafting, and computer application classes (preferred)
  • An unweighted GPA of 2.8
  • Good attendance record

Iliana’s story inspires and demonstrates the profound impact apprenticeship programs can have on individual careers and industry diversity. By leveraging these opportunities, groninger USA and its partners are committed to nurturing talent and fostering an inclusive workforce.
